5 Days Road Trip in Czech Republic Bohemia Region

This 5 days road trip covers most of the popular attractions in Central Bohemia and South Bohemia of Czech Republic.  It is a 1-way trip that starts from Prague to Cesky Krumlov.

Summary of this itinerary:

A. Day 1 & 2 – Prague
B. Day 3 – Kutna Hora
C. Day 4 & 5 – Cesky Krumlov

About Czech Republic

The Czech Republic, also known as Czechia, is a landlocked country in Central Europe and it is a part of the Schengen Area where one can travel freely across borders without any passport.

The currency of Czech Republic is Czech koruna (CZK).

Day 1 & 2 – Prague

For the first day, spend a few hours in the old town square and enjoy the city vibes. When you are walking through the old town, remember that the famous oldest operating astronomical clock will have a short performance on every exact hour. After watching the performance, climb the astronomical clock tower and admire the astounding Prague city view. If you have time to spare, go to the Letná Park to get some amazing pictures of Prague.

Do not worry about the hanging shoes (“Shoefiti”) in Letna Park, it is not a markings of gangs and criminal activity.

On the second day, go to the prague castle and observe the ceremonial changing of guard at 12.00 noon. If you miss it, you can just observe the change of sentries at the gates of the medival castle which take place on every hour in the day. After that, take a small hike to the Petrin Hill and enjoy the city view. If you are good at counting, you might be able to count up to hundred spires from Petrin Hill (since Prague is known as city of hundred spires).

If you are hungry for some adventures, you might want to try kayaking/canoeing in the Vltava River.

Day 3 – Kutna Hora

For day 3, go to the Kutna Hora and visit the Sedlec Ossuary. The Ossuary is quite unique as it uses skeletons from 40,000-70,000 people to form the decorations and furnishings for the chapel.

After visiting the Sedlec Ossuary, go to St Barbara’s Cathedral. The Cathedral is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and it is one of the most famous Gothic churches in central Europe. If you have time to spare, visit the church of the Assumption of Our Lady and Saint John the Baptist. The church is one of the most important Czech Gothic buildings built in the time of the very last Přemyslids and one of the oldest examples of the Baroque Gothic style.

It was a meaningful trip to the Ossuary as the human bones decoration is a reminder that all of us will turn into skeletons in the end.

Day 4 & 5 – Český Krumlov

For day 4, travel to Český Krumlov, one of the most picturesque towns in Europe. Český Krumlov is quite charming as the core of the old town is within a horseshoe bend of the river. Visit the state castle to enjoy panoramic views of the town from the castle walls. The Český Krumlov Castle is the epitome of a fairy tale as several brown bears have been living in the moat protecting the castle for a few hundred years.

For day 5, it is time to go for hiking in Mt Klet. The trail to the peak is relatively easy and the hiking path is filled with scenic views. On the top of Mt Klet, there is a lookout tower which offers unobstructed panoramic view.

There is small restaurant beside the lookout tower where you can enjoy a cold pint of beer at the mountain top.

Ending Remarks

The duration of this trip is adequate for the aforementioned attractions. However, you might want to extend your trip and visit more places (such as České Budějovice, Castle Kašperk or Karlovy Vary) to explore more parts of Czechia.
